Bird Photography

Bird photography is more than just snapping a picture. It’s about getting close to nature and really seeing the amazing variety of bird life we have in New Zealand. When I’m out there with my camera, I feel a deep connection to the birds and their environments. It’s like I’m part of their world for a moment.

I love bird photography because it gives me a chance to slow down and appreciate the little things. Watching a bird in its natural habitat, seeing how it moves and interacts with its surroundings—there’s something really special about that. Each bird has its own personality and story, and I try to capture that in my photos.

Kaiaua is one of my favourite spots for bird photography. This quiet seaside town on the Shorebird Coast is a real gem. It’s just north of Miranda and across from Thames, and it’s a haven for birds. Every time I visit, I’m amazed by the variety of bird life. From tiny shorebirds darting along the beach to larger species soaring overhead, there’s always something new to see.

New Zealand is a paradise for bird photographers. We have such a rich diversity of birds, from the cheeky Kea in the mountains to the graceful albatross over the Southern Ocean. There’s always a new bird to discover, a new behaviour to observe, or a new challenge to capture.

Through my bird photography, I hope to share the beauty of these birds and raise awareness about their habitats. Every photograph is a chance to tell a story and inspire others to appreciate and protect our unique bird life. Bird photography isn’t just a hobby for me—it’s a passion that brings me closer to nature and lets me share that connection with others.

Bird Photography on the Miranda Foreshore

The Miranda Foreshore is one of my favourite spots for bird photography. Located along the Shorebird Coast, just an hour from Auckland, it’s a fantastic place to see a wide variety of birds. The mix of mudflats and wetlands creates the perfect habitat for both native and migratory birds, making it a great spot to capture some amazing shots.

One of the things I love about Miranda is the chance to see large flocks of shorebirds, especially during migration season. Watching species like the bar-tailed godwit or the tiny wrybill in action is such a treat. It’s incredible to think about the long journeys some of these birds make to get here.

If you’re interested in learning more about the birdlife at Miranda, I highly recommend visiting the Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre. They have fantastic resources and bird hides where you can watch the birds without disturbing them. You can check out their website for more information.

Miranda is a special place for bird photography, and I always leave feeling inspired. Whether you’re an avid bird watcher or just love being in nature, it’s well worth a visit.
